Baseball: Jones, Stilley shine as Cougars top Gonzaga
Derek Jones hit a pair of solo home runs and reliever David Stilley (1-0) allowed one hit in four shutout innings to propel the Washington State Cougars (3-5) to an 8-4 non-conference baseball victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (6-2) on Tuesday at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.
Mark Castellitto homered and drove in two runs for Gonzaga.
Men’s golf
Junior Kevin Tucker finished in second place and led the Washington State Cougars to a third-place finish at the Argonaut Invitational at Pensacola (Fla.) Country Club.
Tucker shot a final-round 4-under-par 68 to finish at 5-under 211, four shots behind Tom Whitney of Air Force. Champion Virginia (865) edged Liberty by one stroke and WSU by five shots at the 11-team tournament.
•Gonzaga sophomore Kyle Huus tied for 19th place with a three-round total of 222 and helped the Bulldogs tie for 12th place in the Braveheart Classic at Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont, Calif.
Southern Utah’s Nate Page carded a 215 to earn medalist honors at the tourney hosted by UC Riverside.
Oregon won the team title with an 875 total – seven strokes better than runner-up Southern Utah.
Soccer
The USL/PDL Division Spokane Spiders will conduct open tryouts at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Plantes Ferry Park.
Registration is free and players are required to bring identification and full on-field gear.
The Spiders, under new head coach Jake Moug, are moving from Spokane Falls C.C. to Post Falls Greyhound Park.
