Whits swept at Linfield

Amidst vacillating snow showers and sun breaks, Linfield completed a four-game Northwest Conference baseball sweep of visiting Whitworth on Monday in McMinnville, Ore.

The Wildcats (9-3, 6-2 NWC) won the opener 3-1 in eight innings then pounded the Pirates (3-9, 1-6) for a dozen hits in an 11-1 win in the nightcap.

The series was originally scheduled for Spokane but was moved because of weather concerns.

Chad Flett pitched seven innings of three-hit ball for Whitworth in the opener, striking out six. Reliever Ryan Reitmeier (0-2) absorbed the loss. The Pirates’ run came in the fourth when Chris Bartenhagen’s sharply hit ball was mishandled.

Whitworth, the home team in both games, managed just three hits in the second game. Bartenhagen had a second-inning RBI.

•Washington State’s scheduled exhibition game against British Columbia in Pullman was cancelled because of snow.

•Gonzaga’s scheduled two-game series against Washington today and Wednesday at GU has been postponed due to snow and cold weather. It has been rescheduled for April 6-7.

Track and field

Idaho juniors KC Dahlgren and Mykael Bothrum have been selected for the women’s portion of the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend in College Station, Texas.

Bothum will compete in the shot put, where her school-record heave of 55 feet, ¼-inch won the WAC title by 7 feet and is fifth best in the NCAA.

Dahlgren was the final qualifier in the pole vault. Her season best is 13-73/4.

•Whitworth swept the Northwest Conference men’s student-athlete of the week awards.

Junior Dusty Caseria, who won the 800 meters in the CC Spokane Mini Meet in 1 minute, 54.94 seconds, the best time in the NWC this year, earned track honors.

The field award went to senior Joey VanHoomissen, who had a first in the discus and second in the hammer, the latter with an NWC-season best of 161 feet, 10 inches.

Men’s basketball

Seventh-ranked Puget Sound, which got past Whitworth in the second round, will play undefeated and top-ranked St. Thomas, Minn., Friday in Chicago in the Round of 16 in the NCAA Division III tournament.

That quarterfinal site is loaded. No. 2 Washington, Mo., and No. 3 Wheaton, the host school, meet in Friday’s other game in Chicago.
