RENO, Nev. — Kyle Gibson had 23 points and Olu Ashaolu scored eight of his 14 in the first five minutes of the second half to help the sixth-seeded Louisiana Tech Bulldogs knock off third-seeded Idaho 70-62 Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament.

Gibson made six of nine field goals, including four of six from 3-point range, and had four assists for the Bulldogs (15-17), who advance to Friday night’s semifinal against Nevada (20-11).

Mac Hopson had 16 points and Marvin Jefferson 15 for the Vandals (16-15), who had won six of seven and finished the season with their most wins in a season since the 1998-99 team went 16-11.

Trailing 31-27 at the half, Jefferson scored on consecutive two-handed dunks and Hopson scored in the lane to pull the Vandals to within 37-35. But the Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run and went ahead for good 46-35 on Jamel Guyton’s pair of free throws with 13:38 remaining.
