Courtesy of the Northwest Room of the Spokane Public Library The Spokane Valley was famous for Hearts of Gold cantaloupe. The cantaloupe was sweet, and so popular, that there was a festival held each year in honor of the delicious fruit. It is unknown when or where this picture was taken. The fourth man standing from the left is Harry Nelson, founder of the Valley Herald and the Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce. The man kneeling, on the far right, is Sidney Smith. A mural-size photograph is part of the new exhibit at the Spokane Valley Heritage Museum.
