Bywater pitches Pepperdine to victory over WSU

Matt Bywater struck out 12 in eight innings to lead the 17th-ranked Pepperdine Waves to a 3-1 non-conference baseball victory over the Washington State Cougars on Tuesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, Calif.

Bywater allowed four hits and one run to improve his record to 2-0. Nick Gaudi pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save.

WSU (5-10) led 1-0 when Jared Prince doubled home Greg Lagreid in the top of the fourth inning.

A double, hit batter, single and an error led to two runs for the Waves (12-5) in the bottom of the fifth.

Tyler Brubaker’s solo home run in the bottom of the seventh accounted for the game’s final run.

Anthony Drobnick took the loss for the Cougars. He allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in 21/3 innings of relief.

The two-game series concludes today with the first pitch slated for noon.

•Whitworth’s home game against Lewis-Clark State at Merkel Field was postponed. No makeup date has been released.

Football

The Spokane Shock announced that defensive back James Todd has been added to the roster.

Todd, who played two games for the Shock in the 2007 season, was named to the all-af2 team last season while playing for the Texas Copperheads.

“We are certainly thrilled that he will be back with us,” head coach Adam Shackleford said. “We know we have a player with tremendous talent and character.”

Women’s tennis

Whitworth Pirates freshman Mya Towne was named the Northwest Conference player of the week for her performance in wins over Linfield, Willamette and Lewis & Clark.

She went 6-0 in her singles and doubles matches. She is now 8-0 in singles play and 5-0 in doubles matches. Towne helped Whitworth end Linfield’s 108-match winning streak in NWC play.

Men’s golf

The Idaho Vandals tied for ninth place and the Gonzaga Bulldogs finished 11th at the 12-team Triumph at Pauma Valley tournament in San Diego.

Russell Grove paced the Vandals with a final round 2-under-par 69 and a three-round total of 2-over 215. He placed fifth.

Kyle Huus led Gonzaga, tying for 17th with a total of 8-over 221.

Loyola Marymount won the event and LMU’s John Lim was medalist with a 211.

Boys soccer

Jacob Mager scored an unassisted goal at the 20-minute mark of the first half and goalkeeper Andrew Wilson made it stand up as the Cheney Blackhawks defeated the visiting Pullman Greyhounds in Great Northern League play.

Wilson finished with three saves in his shutout effort.

Pullman keeper Christian Marcelo stopped three shots on goal.

Elsewhere in GNL play, Bryer Reynolds had a goal and an assist to lead the West Valley Eagles to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Deer Park Stags. Reynolds assisted on a first-half goal by Tad Florence and scored the game-winner in the 65th minute. Jared Attridge found the net for DP in the 18th minute. … Mark Clayton and Kevin Fisher scored goals 8 minutes apart in the second half to propel the Medical Lake Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over the host Riverside Rams. Joey Nyberg had the lone tally for the Rams.

Prep softball

Jessica Ulrich tossed a no-hitter and Ulrich and Shaundee Garrett each ripped a pair of triples to power the Lewiston Bengals to a 10-0 six-inning victory over the visiting Moscow Bears in Inland Empire League play. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out. … Post Falls’ game at Lake City was also rained out.

•Katie Bagdon knocked a three-run double, Bre Lookabill had a two-run double and Britney Miller smacked a run-scoring triple to lead the Mead Panthers to a 9-0 win over the visiting North Central Indians in Greater Spokane League action. Alisha Mead came on in relief in the first inning with no outs and the bases loaded and escaped unscathed to earn the victory. … East Valley at Central Valley, Shadle Park at University and Ferris at Mt. Spokane were all rained out. The Ferris-Mt. Spokane game has been rescheduled for Monday at 4 p.m.
