Gonzaga wins eighth straight

Steven Ames picked up his team-best fifth win of the season as Gonzaga beat Pacific 5-4 on Sunday in Spokane, the Bulldogs’ eighth win in a row and second consecutive series sweep.

Mark Castellitto drove in two runs for the third consecutive game for Gonzaga (14-5), and Ryan Wiegand, Anthony Synegal and Jason Chatwood each collected an RBI.

Ames (5-0) went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked two. A.J. Proszek earned his second save.

The Bulldogs wrap up their nine-game homestand with games against Utah on Tuesday and Wednesday.

•Washington State completed a three-game sweep of South Dakota State, winning 13-4 in nonconference baseball action in Pullman.

Cody Bartlett collected four of the Cougars’ season-high 17 hits and drove in three runs. The 13 runs were also a season high for WSU (8-11).

Chad Arnold (1-1) pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits, to earn the victory. He struck out three and walked one.

Shea Vucinich had four RBIs for the Cougars, and Greg Lagreid added three.

•Community Colleges of Spokane used a 21-hit attack to beat Everett Community College 19-5 in Yakima.

Matt Starr had five hits, Ian Atkinson had four, Mark Purser had three doubles and Cam Christian, Justin Murphy and Colby Crawford had two hits apiece for the Sasquatch. Christian (2-0) was also the winning pitcher, going five innings and allowing one run.

•Lewis & Clark and Whitworth’s Northwest Conference doubleheader Sunday was rained out and the games will not be made up.

Rowing

Gonzaga’s rowing teams took on Oregon State on Liberty Lake, with the women opening their season by winning one of five races and the men winning two of five races.

The Bulldog women’s second Novice 8 boat won its race. The Beavers won the Varsity 4, Novice 8, Varsity 8 and Junior Varsity 8 events.

For the men, Gonzaga won the Varsity 4+ and Novice 4+ races. Oregon State took the Varsity 8 by 0.33 seconds, and also won the Junior Varsity 8 and Novice 8 events.

Football

The Spokane Shock traded wide receiver Billy Pittman to the Arkansas Twisters for future considerations.

The team also released defensive lineman Wilson Afoa, defensive back Tremaine Taylor and offensive linemen Joel Clinger and Bobby Byrd.
