Whit softball earns a split in California

Rachel Anderson hit a three-run home run and Ashley Carey had three hits and scored three times to lead Whitworth to a 16-2, five-inning win over Carleton, Minn., on the first day of the Sun West softball tournament in Anaheim, Calif.

McKenzie Stuby also drove in three runs. Jessica Mangis allowed no earned runs.

The Pirates (4-10) dropped an 8-7 decision to host Chapman in their second game despite three-run homers from Carey and Caitlyn Doherty.

Baseball

Mark Castellitto, Gonzaga’s junior left fielder who hit .538 with six RBIs and two runs scored as the Bulldogs swept a three-game non-conference series from Pacific, is the West Coast Conference player of the week.

Track and field

Emmanuel Bofa, a Whitworth junior who won the 800 meters at the Oregon Preview in 1 minute, 51.74 seconds, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, is the Northwest Conference track athlete of the week.
