Whitworth splits pair in softball

Lacey Kerr hit a home run and Jessica Mangis pitched a five-inning two-hitter Thursday to lead Whitworth to a 9-0, five-inning victory over Carleton (Minn.) at the Sun West softball tournament at Peralta Park in Anaheim, Calif.

The Pirates opened with a 6-5 loss to Hamline (Minn.) after giving up five runs in the seventh.

Whitworth finished 3-3 in the tournament.

Baseball

Wenatchee Valley (7-7) scored two runs in the eighth inning of a 3-1 first-game win then routed visiting CC Spokane 13-5 in the nightcap of a twinbill that opened the NWAACC season for both. CCS is 9-4.
