GU merits support

The Spokesman-Review

It’s pretty easy to be a Gonzaga basketball fan today. The thrilling win over Western Kentucky to move on the Sweet 16 has, once again, put Gonzaga on the top of sports highlights all across the country. We should not forget that a great team played a great game and went home to Kentucky, their season over. Gonzaga basketball fans also know the bitter taste of losing when winning was in reach.

Under the leadership of Mark Few, Gonzaga basketball has gone from being a Cinderella team to being a legitimate member of the college basketball elite. The success of the last 10 years seems to cloud the thinking of some who believe that there is anything easy about consistently achieving success. We would do well to remember that we have no idea just how intense the pressure is on the coaches and athletes who entertain us.

We are fortunate to have Few at the helm of GU basketball. He has demonstrated his commitment by the skill, hard work and character he brings to the job. Few and his entire team deserve our applause today and our ongoing committed support, regardless of the outcome of any game or tournament.
