Hayden celebrates this year’s VIPs

Chamber also held shopping campaign, plans other events

Prosperity in the Hayden business community was celebrated March 21 at the Hayden Lake Country Club.

The event, planned and organized by the Hayden Chamber of Commerce, was an upbeat evening of fun, food and entertainment honoring some of Hayden’s outstanding community members. The sold-out event, called “The Wearing of the Green” because of its proximity to St. Patrick’s Day, was attended by 125 guests.

The following individuals were honored with awards in the following categories:

Hayden’s Citizens of the Year 2008 – Chris Costa and Tim Brown.

Hayden’s Distinguished Veteran 2008 – William Wallace Connally.

Northern Lakes Volunteer Firefighters of the Year – Christina Jaeger and Brandon Hermeneutic.

Another highly successful Chamber-planned event was a shopping campaign held March 14, called “Desperate Housewives.” Hundreds of people enjoyed shopping and the opportunity to compete in a drawing for a $500 gift basket. The winner of the basket was Lydia Price of Spokane.

Shopkeeper Tanya Chiono said, “I wasn’t a member of the Hayden Chamber of Commerce when this event was planned, but I chose to be a participating merchant. I had hundreds of new customers visit my store and I gathered 200 new e-mail addresses. I joined their organization today” she said. “Our local businesses have experienced, roughly, a 20 percent downturn because of the recession. Shopkeepers have had to cut their employees’ hours and utilize creative marketing techniques, such as using the Internet to send coupons and announcements to customers,” she said. “Shopkeepers hope they can hold on until the wedding and tourism season arrives to buoy up sales.”

To help local shopkeepers cope with the recession, the Hayden Chamber has formulated an aggressive calendar of events. These events showcase local businesses. They link businesses that some people might think of as competitors and bring them together for activities such as the “Desperate Housewives” event. The Chamber has also taken over responsibility for a number of events formerly sponsored by the city, such as the Halloween and Christmas parades.
