West Valley takes two from Riverside

The West Valley Eagles rode the arm of Anthony Salazar and the bat of Mitch Peterson to a Great Northern League doubleheader sweep over the visiting Riverside Rams (1-2, 0-2) on Saturday.

Salazar scattered three hits and allowed one run while striking out seven to lead West Valley (2-2, 2-0) to a 6-1 win in the first game.

Peterson went 3 for 4 with a double and a home run and drove in four runs to lead the Eagles to a 13-2 five-inning win during the second game.

Elsewhere in the GNL, Cody Weber went 4 for 4 and knocked in a pair of runs to propel the Pullman Greyhounds (2-0, 1-0) to a 7-4 victory over the visiting Colville Indians (1-1, 0-1). The second game was rained out and will be made up April 7 at 4 p.m. … The Clarkston Bantams (3-0, 1-0) used a four-run second inning and a six-run fifth to cruise to an 11-7 win over the visiting Medical Lake Cardinals (0-3, 0-1). The second game was postponed. … Drew Ableman plated five runs with three hits and Sean Scholer scored four times to carry the Cheney Blackhawks (3-0, 1-0) to a 13-9 win over the visiting Deer Park Stags (1-1, 0-1). The second game was postponed because of snow.

•Greater Spokane League: Tyler Pfeffer went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, drove in five runs and scored twice to power the Shadle Park Highlanders (3-2, 3-2) to a 16-5 victory over the host North Central Indians (1-4, 1-4). Peter Smith doubled twice for North Central.

Softball

ISG Tournament: The Coeur d’Alene Vikings finished 4-0-1 at the 36-team Idaho Sporting Goods Tournament in Boise. CdA opened the final day of the tourney with a 3-2 victory over Timberline, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out the win for Amber Coburn (5-0), who struck out five. Vallivue prevented a perfect tourney by the Vikings by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh before a 1-hour, 40-minute time limit hit, leaving the game tied at 3-all. CdA’s Amanda Brouillard had a two-run double in the sixth.

Track and field

Frostbite Invitational: The Freeman Scotties boys and girls won team titles at University Center. Freeman’s boys beat runner-up Northwest Christian 136.5-96, while the Scotties girls held off second-place Lind-Ritzville 124-100. Reardan’s Chace Bell won the boys 100-meter dash in 11.65 seconds and the 200 in 23.5. Freeman’s Luke Matthews also picked up a pair of first-place finishes – winning the long jump at 20 feet, 1 inch mark and the triple jump at 42-8. Coeur d’Alene’s Dominique Billingslea won the 100 (13.52) and the 200 (27.94), while Northwest Christian’s Lisa Vandenburg was first in the 800 (2:34.14) and 1,600 (5:34.83).

•Bonners Ferry Invitational: Timberlake’s boys and girls won landslide team titles. Timberlake’s Ryan Sackstetter was named the male track athlete of the meet with wins in the 1,600 and 3,200. Aaron Palmer of Troy, Mont., was named the male field athlete of the meet – winning the high jump and triple jump. Timberlake’s Caitlyn Nichols was named the top female track athlete after winning the 200 and 400 and anchoring the winning 400 and 1600 relay teams. Priest River’s Taylor Stewart topped the female field athlete – winning the shot put and placing second in the discus.
