Valleyfest kicks off Wednesday

Valleyfest will jump start its 20th year with a kickoff celebration from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at CenterPlace, 2426 N. Discovery Place.

All sponsors, vendors, volunteers and community members are invited to attend to learn more about this year’s plans. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by Tuesday by calling 922-3299 or e-mailing peggy@valleyfest.org.

Director Peggy Doering said that with more than 48,000 expected for the event Sept. 25-27, Valleyfest gives businesses the opportunity to connect with potential customers through brand visibility, networking, product sampling, cross-promoting and local and regional advertising while doing something good for the community.

Street standards hearing postponed

A public hearing that was scheduled Thursday on proposed new Spokane Valley city street standards has been postponed indefinitely.

John Hohman, senior engineer for development, said he hopes the hearing will be rescheduled later in the month.

Hohman said the delay was necessary so related changes in the city code can be presented in the same hearing. The city attorney’s office is still working on the code revisions.

Argonne corridor work to start Monday

Construction begins Monday on the $1.3 million Argonne Road corridor project from South River Way to Frederick Avenue. Construction is scheduled in the evenings beginning at 7 p.m. and continues until 5:30 a.m.

Matt Gillis, project manager from engineering firm Welch Comer and Associates, said night construction will have the least impact to traffic, along with safer working and traffic conditions.

Traffic will be restricted to two lanes. Left and right turns will be eliminated through the construction zone to keep traffic moving safely. A signal modification with a protected left turn signal will be set up at Grace Avenue. Motorists will have access to Millwood businesses throughout construction.

Welch Comer will hold weekly construction meetings beginning May 12 at 6 p.m. at Millwood City Hall.

The reconstruction project is scheduled for 3 1/2 months. If the city chooses to increase the scope of work, going farther south on Argonne, the time scheduled would be extended.
