Ankiel carted off

Rick Ankiel was carted off the field with his head and neck immobilized after the St. Louis outfielder slammed headfirst into the fence following a running catch Monday night.

Ankiel chased down Pedro Feliz’s long drive in the eighth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies but couldn’t stop himself from crashing into the padded center-field wall.

Ankiel stayed flat on his back for several minutes as teammates gathered around him, and the game was delayed about 15 minutes as a hush fell over Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

He was placed in a neck brace and strapped to a gurney before being carted off the field accompanied by team physician Dr. George Paletta and trainer Barry Weinberg. As he was wheeled off, Ankiel flashed a thumbs-up sign.

He was taken to a hospital for a CT scan and X-rays. Paletta said Ankiel was responsive on the field and never lost consciousness.

A-Rod on track

Alex Rodriguez hit a long homer, played seven innings in the field and drew a walk off Philadelphia’s J.C. Romero on Monday in his latest extended spring training game.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said it was possible Rodriguez could rejoin the team Friday, when New York starts a trip at Baltimore.

Joba’s mom jailed

The mother of Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain has been arrested on charges of selling methamphetamine to an undercover police officer in February.

Jacqueline Standley was arrested at her Lincoln, Neb., apartment Saturday night, Lincoln Police Capt. David Beggs said.

Beggs said she sold 1 gram of a substance believed to be meth to an officer for $110 on Feb. 11. The substance was confirmed as meth at the state laboratory.

The 44-year-old Standley was charged with delivery of an exceptionally hazardous drug, a felony. Her bail was set at $5,000 and she was assigned a public defender, whose name was not on her jail record.

Gordon on DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed reliever Tom Gordon on the 15-day disabled list because of a left hamstring strain and recalled right-hander Leo Rosales from Triple-A Reno.

This is the 11th trip to the DL for Gordon, a three-time All-Star.
