Right model, wrong leaders

The Spokesman-Review

I’ve been reading a lot about the grass-roots drive to disincorporate Spokane Valley. As a property owner in the city, who has had to deal with the bureaucracy that’s been created there, I can tell you that my first instinct is to agree with this group.

In my opinion, the city fathers have made a mess of what started out to be a really good idea and have led the city in the exact direction opponents of incorporation predicted. Debt, an uncontrollable bureaucracy and higher taxes. As they say, great expectations are often dashed by the reality of human shortcomings.

Personally, I believe that the city is still a good idea, we just have the wrong people in place to lead it to greatness. Spokane Valley seems to be just a smaller version of a broken government in general. However, in this case the difference is that it is small enough for the citizens to actually change it.

Get rid of the inflated egos, self-interest, special interest, etc., and replace them with community-minded individuals who actually share the hopes of their constituents and welcome their ideas.
