Top seeds dominate tournament

In the 4A district tennis tournament that concluded Thursday at University High School, where the top two finishers advance to next week’s regionals, all the top seeds won championships, in three brackets besting the No. 2 seed.

The only upset came in girls doubles, where third-seeded Sarah Hair and Erica Norris of Mead defeated second-seeded Colleen Gravelle and Alix Silha of Lewis and Clark 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals. However, Hair and Norris fell to their teammates, Britta and Katijean Stime, 6-0, 6-0.

Anna Lambert of Gonzaga Prep won the girls singles with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Leslie Ho of Central Valley.

Ethan Vaughn of Mead defeated Zach Williams of LC 6-1, 6-2 in boys singles, while Mead’s Justin Lee and Ryan Gerbing defeated Peter Ho and Zach Juhre of CV 6-4, 7-5.

The 3A tournament at East Valley concludes today, but in all brackets the top two seeds square off for championships. Consolation matches are also important, however, because four advance to regionals.

Shadle Park’s Patrick Howe meets No. 2 Cody Evans of NC in boys singles; Steve Harms and Justin McClain of Mt. Spokane take on No. 2 Austin Campbell and Jon Casebier of East Valley in boys doubles; Valerie Nauditt of Mt. Spokane faces No. 2 Desi Rainey of EV in girls singles; and Kelle and Katie Bates of Mt. Spokane meet No. 2 Jade Charbonneau and Rachel Duckett of EV in girls doubles.
