Cougars rally to edge Beavers

Jay Ponciano’s RBI single in the ninth inning capped Washington State’s rally from a four-run deficit in the Cougars’ 7-6 win over No. 25 Oregon State on Sunday in Corvallis, Ore.

The Cougars (28-22, 16-8 Pac-10) won two of three games from the Beavers.

•Also in the Pac-10: Kyle Conley tied the Washington career home run record with his 42nd in a losing cause as Arizona used a six-run eighth for a 10-7 win in Tucson, Ariz. The Huskies dropped to 25-26, 13-10 Pac-10, good for fourth place in the conference.

Softball

NCAA Regional: Washington won an Amherst Regional elimination game against UMass 6-1 in 15 innings, advancing to the Super Regionals against Georgia Tech. The Huskies batted around in the 15th. The Minutewomen beat UW earlier Sunday 5-1 to force the evening rematch.

Track and field

Pac-10 Championships: Jeshua Anderson and Lorraine King (400-meter hurdles) and Trent Arrivey (high jump) won individual titles Sunday for Washington State in Eugene, Ore. The WSU men finished fourth, their highest finish since 1998, and the women finished ninth. Oregon won both the men’s and women’s titles. … Washington’s Jordan Boase (400 meters) and Katie Follett (1,500 meters) won individual titles. The Huskies men finished ninth overall, the women sixth.

•NCAA Division III Championships: Whitworth will send seven men and one woman to the event, Thursday-Saturday in Marietta, Ohio. Three Pirates will compete in the shot put – Jeff Kinter, Danjuma Quarless and Michael Nahl – and two will compete in the javelin – Joey VanHoomissen and Alex Hymel. The other Whits competing are Cody Stelzer (high jump), Emmanual Bofa (800 meters) and Elizabeth Mattila (400-meter hurdles). … Caitlin McGrane of Colville will represent the University of Puget Sound for the second straight year in the heptathlon.

Rowing

Pac-10 Championships: The Gonzaga women’s Second Varsity 8 placed seventh on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif., while the Varsity 8, Novice 8 and Varsity 4 boats all came in eighth. … Washington State’s women’s Novice 8 finished fourth, and the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 finished sixth. The women’s Varsity 4 finished seventh. On the men’s side, the Cougars’ Freshman/Novice 8 finished fourth, the Second Varsity 8 finished fifth and the Varsity 8 finished sixth. … Washington’s women’s Novice 8 and men’s Second Varsity 8, Freshman/Novice 8 and Varsity 4 won titles. The women’s Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 and men’s Varsity 8 rowed to third-place finishes, while the women’s Varsity 8 finished fourth.

Golf

NWAACC Championships: Community Colleges of Spokane’s Sam Krause shot a 3-under 69, good for a tie for fourth place, as the Sasquatch men finished the first day in second place at Veterans Memorial Golf Course in Walla Walla. CCS finished the first round at 7-under 281, six strokes behind Southwestern Oregon.

Sasquatch coach Scott Kramer was honored as NWAACC Coach of the Year, and Kyler Gable was selected first-team all-conference.
