CCS women golf champions; men lose in one-hole playoff

Community Colleges of Spokane is back on top in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges women’s golf.

Led by sophomores Katie Sorenson and Chelsea Kenner, the Sasquatch rolled to a 10-stroke victory Monday in the windup of the conference championship tournament in Walla Walla, 472-482 over runner-up Green River.

It is CCS’ ninth title in 13 years, and the fifth in seven years under coach Christie Dalsanders, who had second-place finishes the other two years, including last year.

Sorenson, from Central Valley, finished second with a 9-over-par 153, and Kenner, from Post Falls, was fourth at 159. Both earned all-conference honors. Genna Witmer of Green River was medalist at 150.

The CCS men, who had an unbeaten run to the NWAACC regular-season championship, overcame a six-stroke deficit Monday to tie Southwestern Oregon after 36 holes at 17-under-par 559.

But the Lakers won the title in a 4-on-4 one-hole playoff. SW Oregon had two birdies, a bogey and a par for a 15 while the four CCS golfers shot pars for 16.

CCS freshman Sam Krause shared second at 6-under 138. Three CCS freshmen from Coeur d’Alene, Tyler Johnson, Taylor Porter and Kyler Gable, tied for fourth at 3-under 141.

SW Oregon freshman Andrew Von Lossow was medalist at 10-under 134, finishing in what CCS coach Scott Kramer called “an unbelievable performance.” Von Lossow birdied the last five holes of regulation for a 68 and the playoff hole.

Krause, Gable, Porter and Johnson all were named to the NWAACC All-Conference team.
