Books2Eat invites food for thought

Sometimes a literary event is just for fun – and quite delicious.

Eastern Washington University Friends of the Library will host the annual Books2Eat festival May 27 and the public is invited to dine on some of their favorite works of literature. Well, sort of.

Brenda Tudor, FOL president, explains that Eastern staff, faculty, students, FOL members and others are invited to create an edible treat (not needing refrigeration) with at least a vaguely literary theme. Entries must be submitted to the library by noon on the day of the event.

Everyone is invited to view the entries from 1 to 3 p.m. then vote on their favorites. There are three categories – favorite, entry best matching the theme and most creative.

The winners will be announced at 3 p.m., prizes will be awarded and then the feasting will begin. All entries will be sliced and served free to all in attendance. In years past, there have been elaborate cakes as well as minimalist edibles – a pink Rice Krispies pig (“Charlotte’s Web”), a Sponge Bob Square Cake, a conical cake with brown frosting and thin red licorice pieces emanating from the top (“The Volcano”) and a simple sheet cake frosted in white and with candy penguins lined up across it (“March of the Penguins”).

Literary themes are loosely interpreted, Tudor said, since the idea is just to be creative and have fun. And talent isn’t required either, she said – just a good imagination.
