Man killed in logging accident identified

By The Spokesman-Review

The man killed in a logging accident near Harrison Wednesday has been identified as Maximino Perez-Hernandez, 29, of Honduras.

Perez-Hernandez was employed as a sawyer for Worman & Associates on a work visa, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department.

He was apparently struck by a tree sawed by another employee about 8:40 a.m. near Burma Road and Emerald Drive, east of Lake Coeur d’Alene, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Doug Worman, owner of the Hayden-based logging company, declined comment.

“At this time we’re still handling some details, so we really prefer to keep it private,” Worman said. “Especially with the family being out of the country.”

An autopsy is scheduled today.

It’s one thing to hire foreign workers to milk cows in this state, but now we are allowing companies to import cheap labor to do our logging jobs? Idaho is full of out of work loggers right now, so nobody can tell me that this is one of those jobs Americans won’t do. This man probably lost his life because he didn’t understand or speak English. He put himself and others in great danger. I’d like to know how many more cheap, foreign laborers this company hires, and why they shouldn’t be held accountable. The law says they have to offer these jobs to Americans first, but my gut tells me they did not.
