Race to Witch Mountain

•• Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) stars in this cartoonish remake of the 1975 Disney film “Escape to Witch Mountain.” He’s a Vegas cabbie roped into helping two very human-looking teen aliens. Leave your brain at the concession stand. Running time: 1:39 Rating: PG (dangerous and frightening situations, violence) Garland: 4.

The Soloist

••1/2 Joe Wright’s unsparing, unsentimental account of real-life newspaper columnist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) and his life-changing encounter with homeless cello virtuoso Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx) is an involving chamber piece conducted as though it were a symphony. Terminator Salvation

••1/2 Man and machine can’t seem to get along in this sci-fi shoot-’em-up, the fourth installment in the “Terminator” series. The year is 2018 and the mood is post-apocalyptic, with Christian Bale as John Connor, the resistance fighter leading the battle against the evil Skynet and its relentless robot army. There are a few moments of self-referential humor, but generally the tone is solemn, severe, sermonistic. Running time: 1:56 Rating: PG-13 (violence, language) Hayden: 12:10, 2:40, 5:10, 7:30, 9:55. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

•• Hugh Jackman revisits his X-Men role to show how Wolverine came into being in this meaningless mishmash of combat sequences, passable visual effects, Marvel Comics backstory and goofy Liev Schreiber-as-a-villain thespianizing. Running time: 1:48 Rating: PG-13 (language, sexual content) NorthTown: 12:35, 4, 6:35, 9:35. Post Falls: 12:45, 3:15, 5:30, 8:05. River Park Square: 11:15 a.m., 1:50, 4:40, 7:25, 10.
