Arrivey, Woods lead WSU

Trent Arrivey qualified for the NCAA track and field championships and Justin Woods led a solid effort in the preliminaries by the Washington State Cougars at the West Regional meet Friday in Eugene, Ore.

Arrivey was 6 inches under his best in the high jump with a clearance of 6 feet, 101/4 inches, but grabbed the fifth and final qualifying spot to the national meet – the lone area athlete to advance from the day’s 10 finals. Two others earned point-scoring finishes – Idaho’s Eugenio Mannucci taking seventh in the shot put (57-33/4) and Mt. Spokane grad Jordan Roskelley of Oregon eighth in the pole vault (13-11/4).

Woods continued his hot sprinting, clocking the day’s fastest time in the 200 meters of 20.85 seconds and teammate Marlon Murray won his heat in 20.99 – both lifetime bests. Woods also had the second-fastest time in the 100 of 10.37.

Among WSU’s other athletes advancing to finals was freshman Joe Abbott, who sliced more than a second off his best in the 800, running 1:48.97. On the women’s side, Lisa Egami of WSU won her heat of the 1,500 in 4:23.34.

Women’s rowing

All three Washington boats placed in the top three of their respective heats to advance to today’s NCAA crew semifinals at Cherry Hill, N.J.

The varsity 8 and varsity 4 boats finished third in their heats to earn a berth in the semifinal round, while the second varsity 8 boat took second in its heat to avoid the afternoon’s repechages.

The top three teams in each semifinal heat qualify for Sunday’s grand finals.
