Women Veterans Recognition Day coming Tuesday

If you are a woman who served in active duty in one of the armed forces, in any era, take note: A lot of folks want to honor you.

Women Veterans Recognition Day will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Spokane Veterans Outreach Center, 100 N. Mullan Road in Spokane Valley.

“We take the time each year to honor women veterans’ legacy of service because their service is often overlooked, discounted or disrespected by our society, by historians, and by the military itself,” said Mary C. DeLateur, a center counselor coordinating Tuesday’s event.

“We use the event to educate women of their benefits, bring speakers to talk about wellness, offer them free flu shots, bring in massage therapists to give 10-minute seated massages, feed them a good lunch, give them door prizes, offer them reams of information on various subjects, and give them a flower on their way out,” DeLateur said.

“Our hope is that they feel honored, have made some good connections with other female veterans and are educated about their rights and benefits.”
