Three things we’ll be talking about this week

1. Among the actors who have played the role of Ebenezer Scrooge are Kelsey Grammer, Bill Murray and George C. Scott, not to mention Oscar the Grouch and Mr. Magoo. Next up: Jim Carrey plays the famous curmudgeon created by Charles Dickens as a response to abusive child labor practices in 1843. “Disney’s A Christmas Carol,” a digitally animated 3D version of the story, opens Friday.

2. Voters in Idaho and Washington are watching some contentious races for legislative, city council and school board seats, as well as state and local ballot issues, like Spokane’s Proposition 4 “Bill of Rights.” But with no national races on Tuesday’s ballot, elections officials say we’ll be lucky if more than half of registered voters cast ballots.

3. There will be elation in either Philadelphia or New York when the World Series concludes. This year’s Fall Classic is a rematch of 1950, when the Yankees won the best-of-seven series in four games, with a roster that included Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto and pitcher Whitey Ford. That year’s Phillies were so young, they were dubbed the Whiz Kids.
