Leaf cleanup starting in Spokane

Spokane city leaf collection starts Tuesday and will continue into December depending on the weather. As in past years, the pickups will begin in northwest Spokane and move south and east. Crews are collecting leaves that fall into the streets. Residents are not supposed to rake or blow leaves from their lawns into the streets, although the practice is common. Leaves are accepted at the city-county incinerator and recycling facility as well as solid-waste transfer stations. The first 100 pounds are free. The Spokane Regional Solid Waste System recommends composting leaves rather than throwing them out. This week’s schedule has crews in Northwest Spokane. The city provides a schedule on its Web site.

Leaf pickup in Coeur d’Alene begins Monday

The city of Coeur d’Alene will begin its annual leaf pickup program Monday, working through the city until about Nov. 25. Residents are asked to keep leaves and pine needles on their property until Monday, then to rake them into the street about one foot from the gutter, a city news release said. The city asks that leaves not be bagged and that branches and trash not be included. Residents also are asked to move cars off the street if possible during leaf pickup. Crews will make only one pass through the city. City crews cannot predict when they will be in each neighborhood. Pickup will start south of Sherman Avenue and move north.
