Scheduled Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman is set to become the first female head coach of an NBA Development League team. A news conference is scheduled today to introduce Lieberman as the first coach of the team that will begin play during the 2010-11 season in Frisco, a suburb about a half-hour north of downtown Dallas. The Frisco team also will introduce Del Harris as its general manager and Spud Webb as president of basketball operations.

Out The unbeaten Indianapolis Colts lost starting linebacker Tyjuan Hagler for the rest of the season with a ruptured biceps. Coach Jim Caldwell said Hagler was placed on injured reserve. Second-year linebacker Philip Wheeler and undrafted rookie Ramon Humber are expected to replace Hagler. Indy also will promote rookie linebacker Cody Glenn to the active roster from the practice squad.

Recovering Chicago Cubs left-hander Ted Lilly, who’s been one of the team’s most consistent starters the last three seasons, had surgery on his left shoulder and no timetable has been set for his return. The Cubs said the procedure revealed no major damage to Lilly’s shoulder. Lilly was 12-9 with a 3.10 ERA in 27 starts this season.

Shot Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla is recovering from a bullet wound in his leg after a target shooting instructor accidentally shot him. Dr. Eduardo Reguera said Padilla, who signed with the Dodgers in August, didn’t need surgery after spending time at Metropolitan Hospital in Managua, Nicaragua.

Suspended A junior hockey player has been suspended for the season after a hard check sent an opposing player to the hospital with skull and facial fractures. The Ontario Hockey League suspended Michael Liambas of the Erie Otters. The decision came after a boarding incident in a game between Erie and the Kitchener Rangers last Friday. The 20-year-old Liambas was assessed a match penalty for his hit on Ben Fanelli, 16, whose helmet flew off as he fell unconscious to the ice.

Banned The European Handball Federation has given a three-year ban to Austrian women’s team coach Gunnar Prokop, 69, who ran onto the court and stopped an opposing player from scoring last week. The EHF also fined Prokop $61,500. Prokop resigned Tuesday.
