Baseball: Derek Jeter sure is stuffing his trophy case this year.

The steady Yankees shortstop won his fourth Gold Glove Tuesday, joining New York first baseman Mark Teixeira among the American League players rewarded for fantastic fielding.

Los Angeles Angels center fielder Torii Hunter and Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki both won for the ninth straight season. First-time winners included Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria, Baltimore outfielder Adam Jones and Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle.

Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer and Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco each earned their second award.

National League winners will be announced today.

With nine Gold Gloves apiece, Hunter and Ichiro are one shy of the A.L. record for outfielders, shared by Ken Griffey Jr. and Hall of Famer Al Kaline.

Martin headlines Veterans Committee ballot: Billy Martin, Whitey Herzog, Gene Mauch and Danny Murtaugh are among the former managers who will be on the ballot when the Hall of Fame Veterans Committee votes next month.

Tom Kelly, Davey Johnson, Steve O’Neill and Charlie Grimm also are on the 10-man ballot for managers and umpires.

Baseball won’t expand instant replay: Upon further review … baseball general managers like instant replay the way it is.

GMs failed to take a vote on expanding instant replay following a postseason filled with blown calls by umpires.

Any change for 2010 likely would likely have to be instigated by commissioner Bud Selig, who repeatedly has said he’s against widening the use of video review.

Scully will broadcast in 2010, then decide future: Vin Scully said he will continue in the broadcast booth for the Los Angeles Dodgers through the 2010 season, then decide whether he will walk away.

The Hall of Fame announcer told The Associated Press that he still loves the job he’s had with the team since 1950, but that it’s hard to be away from his wife during a long season.

Roy helps Blazers take out Grizzlies

Basketball: Brandon Roy scored 20 points, LaMarcus Aldridge added 16 points and 12 rebounds, and the Portland Trail Blazers won their third straight with a 93-79 road victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Marc Gasol led Memphis with 20 points, while O.J. Mayo scored 17.

Iverson still missing: Former All-Star guard Allen Iverson wasn’t around as the Memphis Grizzlies returned home after a disappointing 0-5 road trip.

Iverson, an offseason signee, left the Grizzlies last weekend for personal reasons. He received permission from Memphis owner Michael Heisley for the extended leave and reportedly returned home to Atlanta.

NCAA won’t call charges under the rim: A new rule, approved by the NCAA in June, requires secondary defenders to establish position outside of the area directly below the rim to draw a charging call. Essentially, if a player is standing in an imaginary circle beneath the rim and makes contact with a shooter, it’s an automatic blocking foul – no matter if the player has position or not.

Spezza scores winner during shootout

Hockey: Jason Spezza scored the winning goal in the shootout for the Ottawa Senators, who twice came from behind to beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 at home.

Chris Neil scored his third goal of the season with just less than 7 minutes left in regulation to give the Senators a 3-2 lead. Just less than 2 minutes later, Gilbert Brule tied the game with a hard shot from the slot.

GMs keep trapezoid, will discuss headshots: NHL general managers are keeping those trapezoids behind the nets, and will discuss a potential new rule aimed at reducing hits to the head.

On the first day of the GMs meeting, the group decided to stick with the trapezoid rule that limits where goalies can play the puck.

LPGA wins another 3-Tour Challenge

Miscellany: Cristie Kerr shot a 4-under-par 32 on the back nine to lead the LPGA team to a win in the Wendy’s 3-Tour Challenge in Henderson, Nev. It is the LPGA’s fifth win in the made-for-TV event that pits three-person teams from the PGA Tour, Champions Tour and LPGA. The PGA Tour leads with seven wins and the Champions Tour has six.

UConn killing preceded by fight over woman: Two men charged in the fight that led to the stabbing death of University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard told police it began when one of Howard’s teammates disrespected a woman at a school-sanctioned dance, according to an affidavit.

The affidavit charges 21-year-old John Lomax III with murder in Howard’s Oct. 18 death.

Phelps third in 100 medley, misses two finals: Sporting a beard and an old-style swimsuit, Michael Phelps finished third in the 100-meter medley at a World Cup short-course meet after missing out on two other finals in Stockholm, Sweden.
