Nation in brief: Subway driver’s action lauded

Boston – The driver of Boston subway train that came to a screeching halt just before hitting a woman who had fallen onto the tracks has been hailed as a hero.

Charice Lewis got a radio call from a fellow Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority employee who was standing on the platform at North Station on Friday night when she saw the woman tumble.

The woman, whose name was not made public, suffered some scrapes and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. She told authorities she had been drinking.

LDS backs rule against gay bias

Salt Lake City – The Mormon church supports a proposed pair of Salt Lake City ordinances that would make it illegal to discriminate against gays in housing and employment matters, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Michael Otterson, the director of public affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, endorsed the proposals during a City Council meeting.

“The church supports these ordinances because they are fair and reasonable and do not do violence to the institution of marriage,” Otterson said.
