Three Whitworth Pirates men – Rory Buck, Zack Clow and Brian Sherpe – were named Northwest Conference Student-Athletes of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Buck, a sophomore on the swim team, won four races including the 100- and 200-meter fly. In victories in the 100 breast (57.91 seconds) and 200 breast (2:08.11) his times were under the NCAA B provisional cut.
Clow, a junior punter on the football team, was honored as the top special teams player for averaging 42.2 yards on four punts in a season-ending win over Lewis & Clark . Two of his punts were downed inside the 5-yard line. He also threw a touchdown pass as the Pirates’ backup quarterback.
Sherpe, a sophomore goalkeeper, made two difficult first-half saves in the Whits’ 1-0 victory over Whitman. Sherpe has seven shutouts this season.
DeSales was the big winner in a three-way Southeast 2B tiebreaker.
The Irish (7-3) defeated Waitsburg-Prescott 24-8 in Dayton to claim the top seed and earn a home game at 1 p.m. Saturday against White Swan (8-2) in a State 2B opener.
Waitsburg-Prescott (9-1) will advance as the No. 2 seed by virtue of a 22-14 win over the Asotin Panthers in the tiebreaker opener. The Cardinals will play at Colfax (9-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday to open state.
