Roundup: Sasquatch men, women advance

The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch men’s and women’s soccer teams both survived to play another day after posting first-round victories Wednesday in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges playoffs.

Tabitha Grow took a pass from Cori Jo Young and scored 7 minutes into the match and goalkeeper Claire Pflueger made it stand up as the Sasquatch women (10-4-4) eked out a 1-0 victory over the Clackamas Cougars (8-5-3) in Oregon City, Ore.

The CCS women will take on the Tacoma Titans (8-6) in a second-round match at 2 p.m. Saturday in Tacoma.

Andrew Mastronardi netted three goals to power CCS (8-8-4) to a 3-1 win over visiting Pierce (6-7-3) at Spokane Falls Community College.

The Sasquatch men travel to Bellingham for a 2 p.m. Saturday quarterfinal match against the Whatcom Orcas (6-4-5).

•Gonzaga midfielder Sheridan Jones was named to the women’s All-West Coast Conference second team. Defender Elle Sweeney earned honorable mention for Gonzaga. Emily Hutchins was named to the All-Freshman team.

College volleyball

Nicole Graybeal notched 11 kills and Kelsey Kurtz had 31 assists to lead the CCS Sasquatch (28-12, 12-2) to a 25-16, 25-20, 26-24 NWAACC sweep of Wenatchee Valley Knights (21-17, 8-5) at SFCC.

The Sasquatch, who finished second in the East Division, open the NWAACC tournament against South No. 3 seed Clackamas on Nov. 19 at Mt. Hood CC in Gresham, Ore.

College basketball

Five Cardinals, led by Michael Hale’s 19 points, scored in double figures as North Idaho College cruised over Salish College 120-46 in a non-conference game in Coeur d’Alene.

Girls soccer

Maya Marder and Allison Risa scored two goals apiece to lead visiting Overlake to a 5-1 win over Lakeside (5-8-1) in a Washington State 1A match.

Kayce Ruboski scored the lone goal for the Eagles, at 67 minutes.

Football

University of Montana student Matthew Brenner, who kicked a 45-yard field goal to win $10,000 during an Oct. 31 Griz game – only to learn he was ineligible to participate in the promotion because he hadn’t been away from organized football for five years – will get another chance at the prize.

A car dealership, is sponsoring the do-over for the sophomore.

To win the prize, Brenner, who kicked in high school, will have to make an identical kick during Saturday’s game against Northern Colorado.
