Terps drop WSU soccer

Jasmyne Spencer scored in the first half to give No. 19 Maryland a 1-0 victory over No. 14 Washington State in the second round of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer championship Sunday in College Park, Md.

The Cougars, who outshot the Terrapins 12-10 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks, finished their season 14-6-2.

Washington State had two good chances in the second half, but Maryland goalkeeper Mary Casey was able to make saves on both. In the 56th minute, Casey stopped Mallory Fox’s header off a corner kick, and in the 78th minute Kiersten Dallstream had a shot in the box after receiving a long through ball.

•Halley Kreminski’s second goal of the game with less than a minute to play gave No. 2 Portland a 2-1 win over Washington in Portland in the second round of the NCAA championship.

The Huskies, who played the final 40 minutes of the match down a player, tied the game on Lindsey Kasser’s goal in the 56th minute.

The Pilots outshot UW 23-3 for the game.

Division III men

Elly Bulega’s goal in the 83rd minute gave Whitworth a 2-1 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the second round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament in Santa Cruz, Calif.

The win sent the Pirates (15-2-3) to the round of 16 for the third time in school history. Whitworth will face Hardin-Simmons (12-2-6) in next weekend’s semifinals. The location will be announced today.

Keith Kirsch gave Whitworth a quick lead for the second game in a row, heading in Cameron Bushey’s corner kick in the second minute for his sixth goal of the season and second of the tournament.

The Pirates’ Brian Sherpe made four saves for the win.
