Balanced Bulldogs down Vandals

Four Gonzaga women’s basketball players scored in double figures as the Bulldogs defeated Idaho 80-57 at War Memorial Gymnasium in Moscow, Idaho, on Monday night.

Senior Heather Bowman paced the Zags (1-1) with a game-high 20 points, including 16 in the second half when she scored 13 of GU’s final 21 points. Sophomore Katelan Redmon chipped in 15.

The Bulldogs opened a 32-22 halftime lead with eight players scoring at least two points. Tiffanie Shives led the first-half surge with eight points and finished with 14. Vivian Frieson added 12 for the game.

Gonzaga’s defense held Idaho scoreless for nearly 13 minutes at one stretch in the first half.

Bianca Cheever and Shaena Kuehu led Idaho in its season opener with 15 points apiece. The Vandals were plagued by cold shooting, hitting just 27.1 percent from the field.

•Oregon scored five seconds into the game on a 3-pointer to set the tone for an 86-48 victory over Eastern Washington in Eugene in the women’s collegiate basketball debut of coach Paul Westhead.

The Ducks led 11-2 less than four minutes into the game, and 47-25 at halftime.

Junior Julie Piper led the Eagles (1-1) with 10 points and eight rebounds. Junior Kyla Evans added eight points and five boards.

The Ducks shot 41 percent to Eastern’s 29 percent, outrebounded (51-37) the Eagles, and made eight 3-pointers to three for the Eagles. Oregon also had a commanding 26-7 advantage in free throws.

•Montana Tech senior Jessie DePell has been named the Frontier Conference women’s basketball player of the week.

The 6-foot wing from Freeman High School helped Montana Tech to victories over the South Dakota School of Mines and Black Hills State last weekend.

DePell averaged 20.5 points and three rebounds per game. She shot 17 of 31 (54.8 percent) from the field.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock added quarterback Casey Hansen and defensive lineman Vaka Manupuna to the roster.

Hansen was the backup QB for the Shock last season. Manupuna, 6-foot-1, 295 pounds, spent the 2008 season with the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League.
