Health care should unite

The Spokesman-Review

Americans are getting nervous about the “fine print” in Barack Obama’s health care bill. Looks like the plan’s working! The plan, that is, of certain conservatives who want America fractured into a thousand little pieces, each looking after only its own good. If all you want is money, pickings are rich here, and as Joseph Goebbels said, people are so easy to manipulate through lies. Iraq demonstrates that unscrupulous people can manufacture a war and generate billions of dollars out of chaos. Just lie about it and – presto! – no awkward questions. It could work in America, too! Money out of chaos! Let’s foment race hatred and class suspicion and invent scary, formless threats about becoming a nation of bag people because our neighbors will rip us off for health care! Perfect!

If I could sleep at night without worrying about how a health crisis would affect my family, it’s worth something. If I don’t get robbed by some desperate person at the end of his rope, it’s worth something. If I don’t pay for somebody’s diabetes because they got health counseling, it’s worth something. If my nation unites as Americans caring for other Americans? That would definitely be worth something.
