In brief: Help students fill the bus

SPOKANE VALLEY - Central Valley middle school students will be at five grocery stores Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. collecting food for the Spokane Valley Partners Food Bank in its annual “Fill the Bus” campaign.

The students are looking for turkeys, gravy, canned pumpkin, canned vegetables and other holiday food items to be given out in Thanksgiving food baskets next week. More than 900 families are expected to request help this year.

The students will be accepting donations at the Fred Meyer at Sprague and Sullivan, Safeway at Sprague and Evergreen, Yoke’s at 15111 E. Sprague, and the Albertsons stores at 32nd Avenue and Highway 27 and in Liberty Lake.

Donations may also be dropped off at Valley Partners, 10814 E. Broadway Ave., on Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Salvation Army giving out turkeys

LOGAN – The Salvation Army, 222 E. Indiana Ave., will hand out more than 8,200 turkeys to families in need for Thanksgiving on Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The turkeys, along with fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving meal, have been donated by the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Inland Northwest.

Identification for all family members and proof of address are requested.

Tuesday’s Thanksgiving distribution is the largest in Spokane and is made possible by more than 450 Salvation Army staff and volunteers. Supporters of the event include: Tom’s Turkey Drive; Rosauers Supermarkets; A to Z Rental; KREM-2; Second Harvest Food Bank of the Inland Northwest; Norlift; The General Store; volunteers from Fairchild Air Force Base; and community volunteers.
