Plantes Ferry site for races

Plantes Ferry Park will be the site of the USA Track and Field Region 13 Junior Olympics, Open and Masters Cross Country Regional championships on Saturday.

Some 1,200 runners are expected to attend for races of varying age groups and lengths.

Bantam girls and boys (10 and younger) races are at 9 and 9:30 a.m.; midgets (11-12) are at 10 and 10:30 at a distance of 3 kilometers; youth girls and boys (13-14) are at 11:30 and noon(4K); intermediate girls (15-16) and young women (17-18) are at 12:30 p.m.; and intermediate boys at 1 and young men at 1:30 in a 5K race.

The open and master women, at 2 p.m., and open and master men, 2:45, compete at 6K.

Athletes from Washington, Oregon, North Idaho and Alaska will compete. The top 20 individual youth runners and top three finishing teams advance to the national championships, Dec. 12 in Reno, Nev.

All open and masters participants are eligible for the National Club Cross Country Championships.

The event is hosted by the Spokane Regional Sports Commission.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga Bulldogs senior forward Tye Perdido was named to the All-West Coast Conference first team, the WCC announced.

GU senior defender Nick Barclay and senior midfielder Ben Funkhouser were second-team selections.

Also, senior goalkeeper Scott Barnum, senior defender Tim Muravez, sophomore defender Mitch Boland and freshman midfielder James Matern were honorable mention. Matern made the All-Freshman team.

Men’s golf

Gonzaga coach Robert Gray announced that Lewis and Clark Tigers senior Peter Gullickson will play for the Bulldogs next season.

Women’s basketball

Sami Whitcomb buried a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left to lift Washington (1-1) to a 67-66 non-conference win over the BYU Cougars (1-1) in the Huskies’ home opener.
