Roundup: Sweep caps Idaho’s regular season

Sarah Conwell had 16 kills and Anna McKinney set an Idaho single-season record for block assists Thursday as the Vandals closed out their volleyball regular season with a 3-0 Western Athletic Conference sweep of visiting Boise State at Memorial Gym in Moscow.

McKinney had nine block assists to give her 159 for the season, breaking the mark held by Nancy Wicks since 1993.

Alisha King had 10 kills for the Broncos (7-21, 7-9), who defeated Idaho 3-1 on Oct. 12.

The teams meet again at 5 p.m. Monday in Las Vegas as the third-seeded Vandals (15-14, 11-5) open the WAC tournament against the No. 6 Broncos.

•Lauren Corp had 13 kills and hit .440 as No. 22 Saint Mary’s (20-4, 12-1), the West Coast Conference champion, swept Gonzaga 3-0 at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, Calif.

Denise Van de Mortel had 31 assists and 15 digs for the Bulldogs (10-17, 5-8).

•Beth Altena (Mead High) had 22 digs and 19 kills while hitting .400 as Community Colleges of Spokane (29-12) opened the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges tournament with a 3-1 win over Linn-Benton at Gresham, Ore.

Kasey Jurich (University High) added 25 digs and 10 kills for the Sasquatch, who open today’s winner’s bracket play against Bellevue (29-8).

Women’s basketball

Tatjana Sparavalo scored 14 of her 17 points after halftime and Eastern Washington (2-1) made six consecutive free throws in overtime to defeat Idaho 54-51 in non-conference play at Reese Court.

EWU’s Julie Piper had 11 rebounds and 14 points, including a basket with 52 seconds left in OT. The Eagles’ Kyla Evans sent the game into OT with a field goal with 48 seconds left.

EWU led 17-15 at halftime as the teams combined to shoot 12 of 54 from the field.

Bianca Cheever and Jessica Graham combined for 24 points and 22 rebounds for the Vandals (0-2).

•North Idaho (3-0) defeated the visiting Snow College Badgers (5-1) 86-68 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference opener. No details were available.

•Idaho coach Jon Newlee announced the signing of 6-foot-3 post Kelsey Bybee of two-time State 5A champion Coeur d’Alene High.

The Vandals also signed 6-1 wing Alyssa Charlston of Eastlake High in Redmond, Wash.; 6-4 post Ashley Walters of Wilsonville (Ore.) High; and Australian Adrie Shiels, a 6-1 forward now playing at Midland (Texas) College.

Men’s basketball

BJ Shearry hit 7 of 7 field goals and scored a game-high 15 points as North Idaho College (6-0) opened SWAC play with an 80-53 win over the visiting Snow College Badgers (3-2).

Guy-Marc Michel had 14 rebounds for the Cardinals.

Women’s golf

Northern Arizona University coach Brad Bedortha announced the signing of Kaitlen Parsons of University High, who placed fourth in 2008 and eighth last spring at the State 4A tournament.

Girls basketball

Cassie Thompson scored 16 points and visiting Timberlake (3-0) took advantage of 40 turnovers to defeat St. Maries 30-9 in an Intermountain League opener.
