Advantage, Huskies

The Spokesman-Review

The eve of another Apple Cup game brings to mind Carter Strickland’s article in The Spokesman-Review of Sept. 8, 1999, in which he pointed out that the annual recruiting budget for Washington State is 71 percent as much as Washington’s.

Also, the football operations budget and annual athletic donations for Washington are three times greater than for WSU. Other resource advantages for Washington over WSU include tradition and population base. Switch locations of the schools and let’s see how well Washington can recruit players to Pullman.

Is it any wonder the Huskies are far ahead of the Cougars in this series?

For Washington, there is no glory in any victory over the Cougars since there is no excuse for any defeat. Going to the Apple Cup game and rooting for Washington is like going to the Alamo and rooting for Santa Anna.

While this situation has always existed it is time for WSU, the Pac10 and the NCAA to face reality! It’s never going to change. Its Pullman and its in the middle of Nowhere. Unless it occassionally recruits a Super Star Eastern Washington Farm boy, say a Steve Emtman, it is never going to compete with B&C team players from So Cal. Time for WSU to opt out to the WAC, a far better geographical fit and let Boise State, a can’t get no respect school in the BCS, into the Pac 10. If not, WSU is going to continue to flounder in Mediocrity and Boise State is never going to reach its potential. WSU is to fine and to proud a University of Higher Learning to continue to endure this.

If you look at the last ten years, the Cougs have ten more wins than Huskies. It was only 6 years ago that we also had three consecutive years with more than 10 wins and finished season in AP Top 10.

In other words, programs will have ups and downs. Cougs will be back and belong in Pac 10.
