Forbes cashes in for Eastern

From News Services

ARLINGTON, Texas – True freshman Jeffrey Forbes’ 24 points led the Eastern Washington Eagles to a 72-68 victory Saturday night over the University of Texas-Arlington Mavericks.

Forbes was 10 of 16 from the field and grabbed four rebounds. It was just Forbes’ fourth collegiate game after leading Federal Way (Wash.) to the State 4A title last season.

Alden Gibbs and Mark Dunn each added 11 points in the winning effort for the Eagles (2-2). Gibbs also had a game-high three steals.

“The game was really fast and UTA is really athletic, so we had trouble running some of our offensive sets,” EWU coach Kirk Earlywine said. “It turned into a read-and-react basketball game, and Jeffrey’s athleticism, speed and quickness was certainly a contributing factor.”

Marquez Haynes scored 32 points for the Mavericks (1-2). He was 12 for 17 from the field, including 5 for 6 from the 3-point line. LaMarcus Reed added 13 points for the Mavericks.

EWU recorded 14 assists while the Mavericks were limited to six.
