In brief: Blazers hand Timberwolves another defeat

Martell Webster had 21 points and 13 rebounds, Brandon Roy added 18 points, and the Portland Trail Blazers beat Minnesota 106-78 Saturday night in Portland, handing the Timberwolves their 12th straight loss.

Greg Oden had 16 points, and Steve Blake had 14 points and nine assists for the Blazers, winners of 11 straight against Minnesota.

Minnesota hasn’t won since beating winless New Jersey in the season opener.

•Anthony sparks Nuggets: Carmelo Anthony tossed in 30 points and Chauncey Billups scored 21, leading the Denver Nuggets to a 112-93 victory over the Chicago Bulls in Denver.

•Rookie leads Bucks to win: Rookie Brandon Jennings scored 24 of his 26 points in the second half, and the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Memphis Grizzlies 103-98 in Memphis, Tenn., for their third straight victory.

•Young Hornets provide sting: Rookie Darren Collison had 22 points and 11 assists for his first career double-double and fellow rookie Marcus Thornton scored 21 to help the New Orleans Hornets win their third straight while snapping the Atlanta Hawks’ seven-game winning streak, 96-88 in New Orleans.

•James too much for Sixers: LeBron James scored 32 points, Mo Williams added 18 and the Cleveland Cavaliers clamped down in the fourth quarter, holding the Philadelphia 76ers to 10 points over the final 12 minutes for a 97-91 victory in Cleveland.

•Nets remain winless: Al Harrington and Danilo Gallinari each scored 17 points, and the New York Knicks kept the New Jersey Nets (0-13) winless with a 98-91 victory in East Rutherford, N.J.

Iginla’s hat trick ignites Flames

NHL: Jarome Iginla scored a goal in each period to lead the Calgary Flames to a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in Los Angeles. It was his ninth career hat trick.

•Red Wings win shootout: Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored on Detroit’s first two shootout attempts to give the visiting Red Wings a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

VCU upsets No. 17 Sooners

College basketball: Jay Gavin scored 20 points, Larry Sanders added 17 and the Virginia Commonwealth Rams (2-1) never trailed in an 82-69 upset of No. 17 Oklahoma in Richmond, Va.

•LMU tops USC: Jarred DuBois hit four 3-pointers and scored 17 and the Loyola Marymount Lions (2-3) rallied for a 67-59 win over the USC Trojans (1-1) in Los Angeles.

•Hornets edge Beavers: Sultan Toles-Bey had 17 points and six rebounds and the Sacramento State Hornets (3-2) wasted most of a 22-point halftime lead before holding on for a 65-63 victory over the Oregon State Beavers (1-3) in Corvallis, Ore.

It was Sacramento State’s second victory in 32 tries against Pac-10 opponents.

•Portland thumps Oregon: Nik Raivio scored 24 points to lead a big second-half turnaround as the Portland Pilots (3-0) overcame a pair of 10-point deficits en route to an 88-81 victory over the Oregon Ducks (3-1) in Portland.

•Xavier women top ASU: Freshman Katie Rutan made three consecutive 3s during a first-half run that put Xavier ahead to stay, and had a steal and layup that ended the comeback of the 14th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils (2-1) and sent the ninth-ranked Musketeers (2-0) to a 59-46 victory in Cincinnati.

Brooks, Fowler lead at Pebble Beach

Golf: Rickie Fowler shot a 5-under-par 67 at Del Monte, and former PGA champion Mark Brooks had a 69 at Spyglass Hill to share the third-round lead in the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational in Pebble Beach, Calif.

•Westwood has two-shot lead: Lee Westwood maintained his two-shot lead at the Dubai World Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, after shooting a 6-under 66 in the third round.

•Rain shortens LPGA tourney: More rain on already saturated grounds at the Houstonian Country Club in Richmond, Texas, washed out play at the LPGA Tour Championship, forcing officials to cut the event to 54 holes. Lorena Ochoa is the leader.

Ward claims Kessler’s WBA 168-pound title

Boxing: Andre Ward (21-0) claimed the WBA 168-pound title with an unanimous technical decision over Denmark’s Mikkel Kessler (42-2) in Oakland, Calif., adding his first world championship belt to his Olympic gold medal.

•Erdei wins WBC title: Zsolt Erdei of Hungary won the WBC cruiserweight title with a majority decision over Gia- cobbe Fragomeni in Kiel, Germany.

Busch wins race, Nationwide title

Auto racing: Kyle Busch made it a double dose of celebration, winning the Nationwide Series championship before completing a lap and capping his night at Homestead-Miami Speedway with his ninth trip to Victory Lane. Carl Edwards was second in the race and finished second in the series.

Griffin beats Ortiz with split decision

Miscellany: Forrest Griffin beat Tito Ortiz in a split decision at UFC 106 in Las Vegas.

In the co-main event, Josh Koscheck forced Anthony Johnson to tap out with 13 seconds left in the second round.

Two judges had the Griffin-Ortiz fight scored 30-27 and 29-28 for Griffin while the third judge had Ortiz winning 29-28. Ortiz had beaten Griffin in 2006.

Both fighters exchanged blows throughout the first two rounds in a back-and-forth bout.

•Virtue, Moir lead Skate Canada: Canadian ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir have won the original dance to take the lead at Skate Canada in Kitchener, Ontario.
