Roundup: GU duo garners honors

Gonzaga University women’s volleyball seniors Michelle Boevers and Layne Brosky were both named honorable mention as the West Coast Conference announced its annual awards Tuesday. This is Broksy’s second-straight season being named honorable mention.

Boevers, an outside hitter, was the top offensive player for the Zags, closing out the season with a team-high 309 kills (2.73 kills per set) and a team-high 24 service aces. Boevers had double-digit kills in 16 matches, including nine in WCC action, and registered a season-high 19 kills at Portland. She also had 73 blocks and 80 digs. Boevers capped her career with 1,231 kills – only the 11th Zag to tally 1,000 or more kills in their career.

Brosky, a lefty hitter, finished the season with 301 kills (2.69 kps), 49 digs, 72 blocks, 13 assists and two service aces. She had 19 double-figure kill performances, including seven in WCC action. Brosky collected a career-high 19 kills at Tulsa and registered a career-high eight blocks against San Francisco.

San Diego junior Ali Troost was named the WCC player of the year. Loyola Marymount’s Alaina Bergsma won freshman of the year, while Saint Mary’s senior Alita Fisher was the top defensive player. SM’s Rob Browning was coach of the year.

College football

Central Washington University senior Buddy Wood (Riverside High School) has been named to the Daktronics, Inc. Division II Super Region Four first team.

Wood, one of two defensive co-captains on a Wildcat defense that ranks first nationally in Division II in scoring defense and rushing defense, currently ranks second on Central’s squad with 92 tackles and is tied for the team and Great Northwest Athletic Conference lead with 151/2 tackles for losses. The 2009 GNAC Defensive Player of the Year is also within two tackles of the school’s career record, while already holding school and conference records for fumbles forced, fumbles recovered, and fumble recovery TDs.

Girls basketball

Katelyn Loper tossed in a game-high 24 points, hitting three 3-pointers, to lead the Post Falls Trojans to a 53-40 win over the visiting Lake City Timberwolves in Inland Empire League play. Jazmin Smith scored 12 to pace LC.

Elsewhere in the IEL, Jessica Kramer netted 16 points and Nicole Redd scored 11 to power the Lewiston Bengals to a 60-33 win over the visiting Moscow Bears. … Kyeli Parker scored 12 – all in the first half – and Dayna Drager added 10 points to propel te Coeur d’Alene Vikings to a 59-21 road win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs.
