GU women roll after slow start

Sophomore forward Kayla Standish made 11 of 13 field-goal attempts on her way to a career-high 25 points in just 19 minutes of play off the bench and the Gonzaga Bulldogs rolled over North Dakota 85-46 in a non-conference women’s basketball game at the McCarthey Athletic Center on Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs (4-1) had a 40-19 lead at the half over North Dakota (1-4).

Katelan Redmon scored 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting while Heather Bowman put in 11 points for Gonzaga.

North Dakota shot only 31.6 percent for the game with only Jossy Bergan getting to double figures with 13 points.

The Bulldogs got off to a slow start as they missed their first eight shots of the contest and didn’t score until the 16:31 mark when junior point guard Courtney Vandersloot made a 3-pointer to cut the Fighting Sioux’s lead to 5-3. North Dakota then scored six of the next eight points.

North Dakota held its last lead at 11-10. It was all Gonzaga after that. The Zags went on a 17-2 spurt to claim a 14-point advantage with a little over eight minutes remaining before halftime.

Gonzaga plays at second-ranked Stanford on Sunday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
