In brief: Ideas invited for Heyburn park

From Staff And Wire Reports

Heyburn State Park is going through a master planning process that will help guide its development over the next 20 years.

Members of the public can submit ideas through Dec. 15. More information is available at www.parksand recreation.idaho.gov.

Heyburn State Park, established in 1908, is one of the oldest parks in the Pacific Northwest. Located at the southern tip of Lake Coeur d’Alene, it has 5,500 acres of land and 2,300 acres of water. The St. Joe River meanders along the park’s eastern boundary.

Pistol wielded in Hico robbery

A north Spokane gas station was robbed at gunpoint Friday night, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office reported.

A female employee reported that a robber entered the Hico Village store, 10606 N. Newport Highway, about 6 p.m. and demanded cash and ordered her to the ground, Sgt. Dave Reagan said in a news release. The robber brandished a silver-colored pistol, Reagan said.

He left through the west doors, Reagan said.

The robber was described as black, between 45 and 55 years old and about 5 foot 9. He wore a baseball cap, black gloves, a gray sweatshirt and dark jeans, Reagan said.

Reagan said that anyone with information on the case should contact Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.

Robbery suspect arrested, jailed

One day after offering a cash reward, Spokane police arrested a man wanted in connection with a convenience store robbery two months ago.

Police booked Joseph R. Giordanella, 24, into the Spokane County Jail on Thursday, police said in a news release. He remained there Friday night on charges of first-degree robbery and second-degree assault. His bond has been set at $35,000.

Investigators believe Giordanella is connected to the Sept. 29 robbery of the Zip Trip at 3030 E. Euclid Ave. Reports at the time said the store was robbed at gunpoint about 11:10 p.m. and that the robber left with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police said two others are in custody related to the incident.

Boxing author smacks attacker

PORTLAND – A Portland author who has long written about and trained with boxers put some of those skills to the test when someone tried to grab her purse as she walked home with a bag of groceries.

Author Katherine Dunn said her purse strap was yanked so hard it spun her around. She found herself face to face with a young woman telling her to let go of the purse. Dunn said the woman kicked her in the shin and slapped her face when she refused, so Dunn started punching her assailant as hard as she could with her right hand. Dunn said she would normally have led with her left hand, but that was all tangled up in the purse strap.

Police soon showed up and booked 25-year-old Brandy Amber Carroll into the Multnomah County Jail for investigation of felony robbery and theft.

Dunn is best known for her novel “Geek Love.”
