Salmon warning served in Seattle

OUTCRY – Seattle diners who ordered salmon at more than a dozen restaurants last week got their meal with a message: a warning that the creature’s future could be threatened by a giant gold and copper mine proposed for Bristol Bay in southwest Alaska, home to the world’s largest sockeye salmon runs.

Kevin Davis, co-owner of the Steelhead Diner, is an avid catch-and-release fly fisherman who recently returned from Washington, D.C., where he lobbied for permanent protection of Bristol Bay.

“Wild seafood is a rare and special commodity,” Davis told the Seattle Times. “When I heard the news about the Pebble Mine and how it could potentially affect what is probably the world’s remaining strongholds of salmon, I became very concerned.”

Trout Unlimited is strongly opposed to the mine because of its proposed location near the headwaters of two rivers that produce large runs of king salmon and nearly half of the world’s wild sockeye salmon to consumers.

“Measuring and Scoring North American Big Game Trophies” was published in 2009 as a third-edition paperback with 176 pages, how-to procedures, score sheets and dozens of illustrations.

Early resort openers serve skiers/boarders

OUTDATED – The Nov. 13 opening at Lookout Pass Ski Area didn’t shake the earth under local skiers who have come to expect the Interstate 90 mountain to be an early starter.

What is the earliest date for a Lookout opener in the past 10 years?

Answer: Nov. 9, 1995.

White Pass Ski Area’s Nov. 13 opening was bigger news – the first pre-Thanksgiving opener since 1994.

Club’s Web site in good taste

OUTSTANDING – The Richland Rod and Gun Club recently produced a well-thought-out Web site featuring fish and game preparation along with more than 130 recipes.

Much of the information was tested and refined over many years during the club’s annual Wild Game Dinner.
