Cheney grad joins Whitman shrine

Staff And News Service Reports

Shauna Banks Coleman, a Cheney High School graduate who went on to become what Whitman College calls “possibly the most accomplished women’s swimmer in the history of the … program” before graduating in 1997, was inducted into the school’s athletics hall of fame Saturday.

Coleman, who lives with her husband and two children in Oshkosh, Wis., where she is aquatics director of the YMCA, was one of six inductees in the Class of 2009.

She was a first-team NAIA All-American in each of her four seasons, accumulating a total of six individual awards and three in relays. She also earned honorable mention in three individual events and 14 relays in her four trips to NAIA nationals.

Coleman had her best season as a junior, winning Northwest Conference championships in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyles.

At the national meet that year, she placed fifth in the 500 and seventh in both the 1,650 and 400 individual medley, and broke four school records.

She still holds school records in the 400 IM and two distance freestyle races.

Elise Kuhar-Pitters of Gonzaga Prep, a sophomore goalkeeper on the University of Memphis women’s soccer team, was the Conference USA defensive player of the week last week after posting back-to-back shutouts for the second time this season as the Lady Tigers opened conference play.

Kuhar-Pitters has nine career shutouts, third on the school’s career list and six behind the leader. Two of her shutouts this season have been against ranked opponents on the road.

•Two West Valley graduates, cross country runners Krystal Hughes, a freshman, and Richard Keroack, a sophomore, were named the Northern State University’s athletes of the week last week for their performances the previous weekend.

Hughes earned female honors after she finished 32nd out of 287 runners, the Wolves’ top finisher, timing 24 minutes, 2 seconds for 6,000 meters in the Roy Griak Invitational.

Keroack was the male winner after placing 37th out of 238 runners in the same meet, his time of 26:55 for 8,000 making him NSU’s second finisher.

Hilary Koenigs of Lewis and Clark continues to have a stunning start to her freshman volleyball season at Vassar, collecting more honors from the Liberty League.

She has been honored every week this season, last week being named rookie of the week for the third time after a five-match stretch in which she had 196 assists in 19 games, including a career-high 50 in one match, double figures in digs in each of the five matches, nine kills, four aces and 10 blocks.

Annie Brophy, a Notre Dame senior from Gonzaga Prep, shot 74-75–149, 6 over par, to tie for 14th as the Irish tied for third in the rain-shortened Bettie Lou Evans Invitational women’s golf tournament in Lexington, Ky., last weekend.
