Roundup: Aggies rally to edge Vandals

Idaho jumped out to a 2-0 lead 22 minutes in, but New Mexico State used a three-goal outburst in a 12-minute span of the second half to earn a 3-2 Western Athletic Conference victory Sunday in Las Cruces, N.M.

Chelsea Small scored for the Vandals (8-5, 1-1 WAC) at the 18:24 mark, and Jenn Hull added a goal at 22:37 as Idaho held a 2-0 lead at the midway point.

Prior to the Aggies’ three-goal second half, Idaho had allowed only five second-half goals all season and hadn’t allowed more than one goal in its previous 11 games.

•Kelsey Werre scored Gonzaga’s only goal in a 2-1 non-conference loss to Portland State on Sunday in Portland.

Werre’s goal at the 16:16 mark tied the match at 1-1 for the Bulldogs (6-6-0). The Vikings scored the game-winner with less than 10 minutes remaining in the opening half.

Jessie Thalman made five saves for Gonzaga.

•Danielle Foxhoven scored twice as No. 3 Portland beat No. 25 Washington State 2-1 in non-conference action in Portland.

The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for the Cougars (7-3-0).

Kiersten Dallstream scored for WSU and has scored a point in seven straight matches.

•Sidonia Davin scored her third goal of the season to give Whitworth a 1-0 win over Willamette in a Northwest Conference match in Spokane.

The Pirates (9-2, 6-1 NWC) earned their fifth 1-0 victory of the season.

Men’s college soccer

Justin Meyer scored twice, Kekoa Mountcastle added a goal and Elly Bulega had two assists as Whitworth beat Willamette 3-0 in Northwest Conference play in Spokane.

The Pirates (7-2-1, 5-1 NWC) moved into sole possession of first place in the conference.

Whitworth pulled away with three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Brian Sherpe played the first 77 minutes in goal for the Pirates and made two saves.

•Brandon Zimmerman’s penalty kick at 89:15 gave Santa Clara a 1-0 win over Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference match in Santa Clara, Calif.

Scott Barnum had seven saves for the Bulldogs (3-4-2, 0-2-0 WCC).

•Washington and No. 4 UCLA played to a 1-1 draw in a Pac-10 match in Seattle. The Bruins scored in the eighth minute, and the equalizer for the Huskies (3-4-3, 0-0-2 Pac-10) came on an own goal by UCLA.

Hockey

Curtis Pereverzoff and Spencer Brodt scored two goals each as the Castlegar Rebels beat the Spokane Braves 6-3 at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Jake Peterson, Nick Redding and Rance Hughes scored for Spokane, and Redding notched two assists. Spokane’s Cash Ulrich made 34 saves.
