Ordered A judge has ruled the man accused of gunning down a legendary Iowa high school football coach is mentally competent to stand trial. Butler County District Judge Stephen Carroll filed an order Monday that says 24-year-old Mark D. Becker can appreciate the charges against him, understand the proceedings and assist with his defense. Becker had been scheduled to stand trial last month in the June shooting death of Aplington-Parkersburg coach Ed Thomas.

Debut No. 1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg has made his debut as a professional pitcher for the Washington Nationals. The 21-year-old right-hander allowed one run and three hits in two innings, striking out two Monday during an Instructional League game against Detroit in Viera, Fla. He threw 19 of 25 pitches for strikes in his first game action since signing a record $15.1 million, four-year contract as the No. 1 pick in June’s amateur draft. Strasburg had not thrown competitively since his final game for San Diego State in the NCAA Regionals on May 29. He reported to Viera last month and has been working on building up arm strength.

Barred Prosecutors say a suburban Chicago man accused of secretly making nude videos of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews apparently also uploaded videos of other women to the Internet. Federal prosecutor Steve Grimes said Monday the videos were shot through hotel peepholes and uploaded under an online name used by 47-year-old Michael David Barrett. Barrett is accused of videotaping Andrews nude by aiming a cell phone camera through an altered peephole in the door of her hotel room. U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys on Monday ordered Barrett released with an electronic monitoring bracelet on his ankle and barred Barrett from using the Internet.

Out Oakland’s struggling offense will be without starting running back Darren McFadden for the next few weeks. Coach Tom Cable said McFadden would have surgery today to repair torn cartilage in his knee. He is expected to miss two to four weeks. For all the criticism quarterback JaMarcus Russell has received for his poor play, McFadden and the running game haven’t been much better. McFadden had minus 3 yards rushing in Sunday’s loss at Houston and is averaging just 3.1 yards per carry. Russell is completing just 39.8 percent of his passes.
