Sports in brief: Whits’ Anderson might be finished

College football: Whitworth standout running back Adam Anderson’s senior season appears to be over.

Anderson reinjured his right ankle in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s loss to Willamette. He initially hurt his ankle against La Verne (Calif.) on the opening kickoff of Week 2.

“I met with the doctor and he thinks it’s a sprain, just like last time, but it took three weeks to get better,” Anderson said. “It wasn’t 100 percent (vs. Willamette), but I figured I could tough it out. He said it basically depends on how bad the sprain is. We’ll see, but it could be 6-8 weeks, so I could possibly be done.”

Whitworth has five games remaining. The Pirates’ season finale is Nov. 7.

Anderson, who had 11 carries for 32 yards Saturday, was a second-team All-American last season after leading NCAA Division III in all-purpose yardage (243.8 per game).

If he isn’t able to return, Anderson said he hopes to receive a medical redshirt so he can play next season.

Get licks in on fleeting sundae

College football: You can’t call him the Flavor of the Month – or even the Flavor of the Week, exactly.

Dennis Erickson, who has done three tours on the Palouse as a head football coach – two at Idaho and one at Washington State – returns again Saturday with the Arizona State Sun Devils, the Cougars’ 2 p.m. homecoming opponent at Martin Stadium.

To commemorate that, Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shoppe on the WSU campus is offering a special on the “Dennis Erickson Sundae.”

Well, sporadically offering.

“Here today, gone tomorrow,” comes the explanation from Ferdinand’s. “It’s good, but you can’t rely on it to be around for very long.”

Wahl signs with Flames

Junior hockey: Spokane Chief forward Mitch Wahl has signed a three-year-entry contract with the Calgary Flames.

Wahl was a second-round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and registered 32 goals and 67 points last season with Spokane, both second on the team.

The 19-year-old is back in a Chiefs’ sweater for his fourth season and has two goals and six points in five games this year.
