Greencastle Soap Classes Advanced Soap-making Class – Oct. 14-15, 7-9 p.m. Students design their own fragrance and explore the options of coloring soap with pigments, dyes or natural herbs and spices. Goat-milk soap will be discussed. Students will each bring home about two pounds of fresh handmade soap. Cost is $45. Class size is limited; call to reserve a spot. Lotion-making Class – Oct. 21, 7-9 p.m. Students learn how to make oil and water emulsions and how to blend a fragrance. Guitar Class – Townes Van Zandt and TX Songwriters – For ages 16 and older, eight-week class runs Oct. 15-Dec. 10, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Students examine the roots of Townes Van Zandt’s music, life and lifestyle while playing his songs, watching videos and reading from a recent biography. Washington Idaho Symphony Young Artist Competition – Open to Pacific Northwest instrumentalists and vocalists age 14 to 30. Call for writers

Children’s Poetry Contest – Spokane County students from grades 1-12 are invited to submit up to three poems no longer than 21 lines each. Finalist poems will be dramatized and read onstage by Spokane-area actors during the Get Lit! literary festival in April 2010. Winning author will receive a free class at the Spokane Civic Theatre Academy. Poems may be on any subject appropriate for a family audience, should be the original work of the author and will be read and selected by a panel of judges. Deadline for entry is Jan. 31.
