Thorne sets course record

The Ferris Saxons boys swept a Greater Spokane League cross country meet at home on Wednesday thanks to a record-setting effort by Adam Thorne.

Thorne finished the 5,000-meter race in 15 minutes, 38 seconds – shattering the mark of Shadle Park’s Michael Kiter by 18 seconds.

Thorne easily outdistanced Mt. Spokane Wildcats runners-up Allan Schroeder (16:04) and Hunter Johnson (16:09).

The Saxons beat Mt. Spokane 23-34. Mt. Spokane topped Shadle 20-37. Rogers fielded an incomplete team.

In the girls meet, Shadle’s Andrea Nelson (19:29), Katie Morris (19:30) and Kendra Weitz (19:30.5) finished 1-2-3 as the Highlanders beat Mt. Spokane 17-38.

The Wildcats edged Ferris 26-29. Rogers’ team was incomplete.

In other GSL meets, Mead’s Andrew Gardner (16:58 for 5,000) and Cory Foss (17:15) grabbed the top two spots at East Valley to lead the Panthers to an 18-37 win over the Central Valley Bears and an 18-43 victory over the Knights. CV, led by Rudy Spencer’s third-place effort in 17:33, beat EV 20-41. In the girls race, Baylee Mires clocked in at 20:45 and teammate Danielle Maldonado was second in 21:00 to help Mead slip past CV 27-28 and beat EV 18-41. CV beat EV 19-40. … In a four-way boys race at Finch Arboretum, Ben Johnston (16:29 for 5,000) topped the field and teammate Casey Adams (16:46) was third to help the North Central Indians sweep the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups 16-45, the Lewis and Clark Tigers 25-33 and the University Titans 20-40. LC topped G-Prep 20-35 and U-Hi 23-32. LC’s Chris Ennis took second in 16:36. In the girls race, NC’s Katie Knight finished first in 19:59 but LC – behind Alison Keenan’s second-place finish in 20:15 – rolled to victories over G-Prep 23-32, NC 24-31 and U-Hi 18-37. G-Prep edged NC 26-29 and NC topped U-Hi 20-35.

Delaney Zalud scored in the 67th minute and visiting Mt. Spokane (8-1, 4-1) knocked Mead (7-1, 5-1) from the unbeaten ranks with a 2-1 victory. Mead pulled even at 1 on a goal by Mikayla Anderson in the 58th minute. … Lewis and Clark (7-3, 4-1) scored twice in the final 6 minutes on goals by Annie Pokorny and Bev Amstadter to beat visiting Ferris (4-6, 2-3) 3-1 at Hart Field. … Hailey Bell had two goals and Amanda Blisener added three assists as East Valley (2-5, 2-4) overpowered visiting Rogers (0-5, 0-5) 6-0. … Jackie Morden scored twice and Haileigh Miller had three assists to lead Central Valley (3-6, 2-3) to a 5-1 win over visiting North Central (1-7, 0-6). … Nikki Caudill scored in the 19th minute to lift visiting University (8-2, 5-1) to a 1-0 win over Gonzaga Prep (6-3, 3-3).
