With lowered expectations, you’ll probably love ‘Year One’

‘Year One’

Zed (Jack Black) and Oh (Michael Cera) are dumb, even for cavemen, in this lowbrow, only fitfully amusing comedy about the misadventures of two inept hunter-gatherers expelled from their primitive village after accidentally setting it on fire.

Zed and Oh soon find themselves traipsing through various Bible episodes, eventually winding up in Sodom, where the homophobic jokes fly fast and furious.

You will laugh, as long as you don’t expect much more than a series of loosely connected sketches. (1:37; PG-13 for crude language, comic violence and copious sexual and bathroom humor)

‘My Life in Ruins’

In fashioning a comeback for Nia Vardalos, writer Mike Reiss has cribbed much from her “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” playbook.

A classical history professor left high and dry by Athens University cutbacks, Vardalos’ Georgia finds herself scraping together a living in Greece as a guide for a tour operation. In an effort to get Georgia to quit, her boss saddles her with an unventilated bus and a global army of tourists.

Georgia has two white knights lurking in plain sight: her sullen bus driver, Poupi (Alexis Georgoulis), and Irv (Richard Dreyfuss), a garrulous American tourist with a big heart. (1:36; PG-13 for sexual content)

‘Anvil! The Story of Anvil’

This riveting new documentary about a couple of old Canadian headbangers who are still chasing the heavy-metal dream plays like a reality-based version of Rob Reiner’s 1984 mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap.”

There’s a disastrously attended European tour and a semi-triumphant comeback concert in Japan. And the drummer’s name is Robb Reiner.

But “Anvil!” is a poignant portrait of band co-founders Reiner and singer-guitarist Steve “Lips” Kudlow. (1:30; not rated, contains full frontal male nudity and crude language)
