Roundup: Cougar women edge Seattle U.

Ashley Johnson and Tiara Pittman scored quick goals in the second half as Washington State beat Seattle University 3-2 on Sunday in a non-conference women’s soccer match in Seattle.

Maggie Dougher scored her first collegiate goal in the first half for the Cougars (8-3-1).

Johnson’s goal in the 71st minute broke a 1-1 tie, and Pittman found the back of the net just over two minutes later to give WSU a 3-1 lead.

•Brittany Sparks’ goal in the 64th minute gave Eastern Washington a 1-0 win over Idaho State in Big Sky play in Cheney.

The Eagles (5-6-1, 2-0 Big Sky) are 2-0 in league play for the first time and are tied atop the conference standings with Sacramento State.

Sparks’ goal was her ninth of the season, extending her school record.

•Erin Salmon’s goal late in the second overtime gave Utah State a 2-1 win over Idaho in Western Athletic Conference action in Moscow, the Vandals’ third straight loss.

Jenn Hull scored for Idaho (8-7, 1-3 WAC) in the 59th minute.

•Lauren Linford scored twice and Aly Houghton notched two assists as North Idaho College (5-5-4) beat the Gonzaga club team 6-0.

Men’s college soccer

James Cohn’s second-half goal gave San Diego a 1-0 West Coast Conference win over Gonzaga in Spokane.

Senior keeper Scott Barnum made six saves for the Bulldogs (4-5-2, 1-3-0 WCC).

•Justin Meyer’s goal in the 77th minute gave Whitworth a 1-0 victory over Whitman in a Northwest Conference match in Walla Walla.

The Pirates (8-2-1, 6-1 NWC) remained in sole possession of first place in the conference standings.

Brian Sherpe had four saves for his third shutout of the season. Meyer’s goal was his fifth of the season, tying him for the team lead.

•Ryan Moore scored his fourth goal of the season as Washington earned a 1-1 tie with Stanford in Pac-10 play in Palo Alto, Calif.

The Huskies (4-4-4, 1-0-3 Pac-10) are unbeaten on the road this season (3-0-2).

Hockey

Joel Stewart scored twice as the Spokane Braves beat the Grand Forks Border Bruins 4-1 at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Guisseppe Dippolito and Chip Petrino also scored for Spokane, which peppered Grand Forks netminder Tyler Stamler with 53 shots.
